WWII Tribute, Veterans Memorial Sanctuary Island, Vero Beach, FL

The WWII Tribute, located on an island in the Indian River Lagoon, is designed as both a memorial and a stage. Working with the geometry of mature live oaks surrounding an existing honor circle, the stage shifts 45 degrees off the north-south axis to provide more opportunities for shade and less glare from the sun during large morning gatherings.

XDEA Architects led the visioning process with a group of local veterans and community members to develop a study that was presented to the Vero Beach City Council in April 2022.

The Contemplation Grove, located behind the stage or Reviewing Stand, slopes gently to mitigate the 30 inch height differential between the stage and the honor circle to provide ramp accessibility. Twelve palm trees provide shade for benches below and mark the passage of time as the sun slowly moves across the grove throughout the day, changing slightly each month of the year.

Reviewing Stand to accommodate both small gatherings and formal ceremonies for up to 1,200 visitors and participants on Memorial Day and Veterans Day

The Tribute acts as a central gravitational force that unites varied memorials located along the perimeter of the island. WWII Tribute visitors become both observers and participants, engaged in remembering, honoring and learning about those from Indian River County who sacrificed their lives in honor of their country, while inspiring future leaders.
